Born in Osaka, she earned a master's degree in architectural design from Kyoto Institute of Technology. She began her career at an institutional design firm, working on welfare and educational facilities, and later joined UDS Inc., where she focused on hotel design and branding. In 2026, she founded HYAN. Her work spans the full scope of spatial design, from architecture and interiors to furniture design, as well as the curation of furniture, objects, and art. Outside of practice, she enjoys cooking and hosting friends around the table. She travels occasionally and is particularly drawn to the culture and lifestyle of Morocco. When we purchased this late-1970s house and took it on as our own residence, we chose renovation with seismic upgrading over demolition and replacement. Working with the sound, well-maintained existing structure, our intent was to retain the site's scale and atmosphere while giving the house renewed life through spatial reconfiguration and a considered palette of materials—updating it and carrying it forward as architecture. Entrance. The sprayed exterior and tiled porch showed age but no major damage, becoming the starting point for rereading the existing envelope. 2. Garden and house. Existing planting and the site's level change informed the decision to keep the indoor–outdoor connection. 3. Dining room looking to the garden. The large opening and the view of greenery were assets worth retaining after renovation. 4. Living and dining as one room. Spatial continuity and the condition of floor and ceiling suggested the plan could be reworked. 5. Original tatami room. Conventional timber posts and lintels showed no major deterioration, supporting the decision to keep the frame. 6. Corridor under the stair. Circulation was dark and narrow, but no significant structural damage was apparent. 7. Original galley kitchen. Late-1970s fixtures and finishes were identified for replacement with built-in work and natural materials. 8. Kitchen work area. Aging equipment led to renewing the counters in a honed terrazzo finish. 9. Western-style room. Blue carpet and built-in storage were to be replaced as the room's use was reorganized. 10. Study with built-in desk. The original desk and closet were still serviceable and helped define the scope of work. 11. Wood-paneled room. Surface finishes would be updated while reading the existing layout and window positions. 12. Original bathroom. With "NEO PUBLIC HOUSE" as its concept, it reinterprets the boundary between public and private and proposes a new form of hotel as a social space in the city. The lobby and terrace on the upper floors were planned as open spaces where people can naturally gather and share time, while incorporating greenery and the urban view. The guest rooms accommodate diverse stay styles, and the suite composed of a bar room and theater room serves as both a private space for the stay and a social space within the room. Throughout the hotel, the aim is to create a new stay experience where the individual and the collective, private and public, intersect. To savor both stay and cuisine, the facility is composed of two buildings: a guest wing and a restaurant wing. In the guest wing near the sea, the infinity pool draws the eye toward the water, and the horizon opens quietly into view. The space is restrained in material and scale, arranged as a backdrop that brings the presence of nature to the fore. The restaurant wing, perched on higher ground, offers counter seats overlooking the bay through the trees, so that the meal itself becomes an encounter with the landscape. The two wings, each with a distinct sense of place, shape contrasting rhythms of stay: time to rest the body, and time to face the scenery. It aims to bring new vitality to the area through Okinawan art and culture. Art curation was handled by SANDWICH, and the exterior facade draws on motifs from artworks. The building itself is intended to appear as art within the landscape. A gallery space inside allows visitors to move through the building and view art against the backdrop of the sea, while works are also placed in shared areas and guest rooms so that art is encountered naturally during a stay. "Anteroom" means a waiting room, and the hotel is positioned as a place to prepare for the next destination. The rooms evoke a ship on the sea, with a blue-gray palette and soft, rounded design and materials to create a calming space. The stay itself is meant to be a moment to gather one's thoughts and senses. By layering commercial, lodging, and social programs, we aimed to create a place open to the city that would grow over time. Rather than dividing space by use, the architecture is organized around terraces arranged like stages, so that movement and sightlines cross gently. The intention is for the everyday moments of visitors to shape the character of the place. The hotel floors were planned as calm spaces that respond to Miyakonojo's rich natural setting. The top-floor suite includes a courtyard, bringing in light, wind, and greenery to create a stay that flows between inside and out. The stay is themed around stepping away from the hustle of daily life and turning one's senses inward. All guest rooms feature semi-open-air baths, allowing guests to soak in the hot spring while sensing the presence of the forest. In the spacious rooms, guests can spend time as they wish, and the materials and color tones employ a calm quality that harmonizes with nature. The space as a whole was arranged with care for a sense of distance that blends into the surrounding nature. Though situated at the threshold of a vibrant city, the hotel aims to offer a stay that allows guests to step away from daily bustle and reset. The design concept is "Greenroom"—planned as a calm place to spend one's own time before heading out into the city, like a green room in a theater. Plants throughout the building create an environment where one can sense nature, while soft colors and materials shape a warm atmosphere. The hotel offers 32 rooms in ten types. Rooms in dusty green and dusty pink feature spacious bathrooms and saunas, designed so that the stay itself can be enjoyed.
